Itty, Bitty Leadership Tip #4

leadership mind

Man’s mind is what separates him from other animals. Animals have instincts…they react in response to stimuli. Man has creative capacity. We hold a vast storehouse of data that allows for original problem solving.

It’s been stated that we humans operate on less than 10% of our mental capacity. Some estimates are even less than 5%! Can you imagine what we could do if we even used 20%…or what about 50%?

I don’t think anyone really understand the capability of the mind. However, I think successful leader is not a person without problems. Rather, a successful leader has learned how to appropriately use their conscious mind to solve their problems.

First, think about how much time is spent worrying. What do we worry about: Read the rest of this entry »

Happiness: A State of Mind

Conscious Awareness

I’m always wondering and observing…I ask a lot of questions. For instance, why are some people unhappy even though they are labeled “successful”? From the outside looking in, they appear to have it all – significant income, material possessions, fame – but they’re not happy. Then there are also those that seem to have that certain “something”. Everything they touch turns out perfectly – their relationships, children, health, work, homes, etc.? Why does “everything” work for some, and for others, “nothing” works?

Or, have you ever wondered why two people can have basically the same opportunities, but one is miserable while the other is happy? The pursuit of happiness is the focus of living.

Would you not agree that happiness is the true definition of success (see Success…What’s Your Definition)? I believe truly successful people Read the rest of this entry »

Think Small

think small

Volkswagen had just launched the VW Beetle in 1960 to the U.S. market. Detroit was busy making vehicles which were expanding in size to suit growing baby boomer families. The Beetle was certainly unique in looks but that didn’t appear to be such a good thing..it wasn’t selling. To top things off, the round, lady-bug-like vehicle was produced in Wolfsburg, Germany at a plant recently controlled by the Nazis. To solve the problem, Volkswagen hired ad campaign manager Doyle Dane Bernbach. Mr. Bernbach came up with a print ad featuring a very small picture of the Beetle in the upper left hand corner of the page with the words Read the rest of this entry »

Embrace the Non-Expert

Any process that requires thinking also requires some creativity. Got a complex problem? Looking for a creative solution? Where do you turn?
Your first choice is to turn to the “experts”, right? Experts need to specialize. They focus on specific areas so they can be as effective as possible. This reduces the time needed to solve problems. However, they may have difficulty seeing the big picture because they are unable to stretch their thinking beyond this “area of expertise”. Experts may miss obvious solutions. They may force the solution to come from within their area of expertise. Abraham Maslow said, “To the man who only has a hammer, everything he encounters begins to look like a nail.”

The experts may not always be the best individuals to turn to for guidance. Here’s an alternative…regular people, the non-experts. Talk to people outside the area of question. You might talk to the mailman, your neighbor or Aunt Sally. Look for someone that doesn’t know the rules; someone that doesn’t know what isn’t possible.

Regular people don’t know what the limitations are. They don’t know how things are “supposed” to be. Experts may take those limits for granted. Non-experts provide out of the box thinking…because to them there is no box.

Creative ideas require someone who knows less. These ordinary people probably won’t solve your intricate problem but they may provide a suggestion that starts you thinking in a new way so you can solve the problem yourself. The idea might come from your son’s best friend or the yoga instructor.

You just have to be open to it…and go get it. Allow the gardener or the janitor to assist you in having a Better Day!

Potential’s Unlimited

I’m continually fascinated by technology. I’m sitting on an airplane at about 30,000 feet just over Phoenix, Arizona (according to the pilot)…and I’m connected to the internet writing this blog post! In another window I’m carrying on a Skype conversation with a business partner. Oops…was just cautioned by the flight attendant, “No video chatting is allowed”. Well, that’s ok. As long as I can ‘chat’, I’ll get the job done. Pretty cool how this works, huh?

Inflight Internet

So, that gets me thinking…we’ve come so far so fast. Couldn’t connect to the internet while in flight a year ago! Well, I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t even connected to the internet 15 years ago! Can you even imagine the changes that will take place in the next 15 years? Actually boggles the mind!

When you think about the mind and what’s possible, the potential’s really unlimited. I continue to wonder what might BE. And, I’m not limiting that to technology… I mean what might be possible if we really utilize the full potential of our mind? What questions might be answered? What problems might be solved? What beliefs might be shattered?

We don’t really know what change looks like, do we? Here’s to a Better Day
